Dealing With Stress As An Entrepreneur
It’s hard to remind yourself that stress is just part of life when, as a business owner or entrepreneur, you’re continually driving yourself harder and further every day. You may usually manage quite well, but sometimes you can’t help but let the stress get to you. And, that’s when things start to get out of control.
As a new business owner, you may find yourself waking up many times in the middle of the night. Your heart may be racing and your mind buzzing. Perhaps you feel anxious and stressed about things which haven’t even happened yet? So, when someone says, “don’t stress”, it can leave you feeling frustrated. It’s not like you have a choice, is it?
There are things you can do to help you calm down and focus on the positive, like staying mindful or practising meditation. Both of those techniques have been proven to reduce stress and soothe the mind. But what do you do if they don’t work for you? Not everyone has the capacity to sit still long enough for those, especially without some practice.
Luckily, there are alternative techniques which might help.
Music: Choose music which appeals to you. Don’t be told what you should or shouldn’t listen to. If the hard beats of metal music match what you’re feeling, then listen to it. It’s like exercise, and it will gradually ease your panic and replace it with energy. If you prefer classical music to soothe your mind, then go for that. Only you know what will work for you, and it might be different each time. Trust yourself. Your mind knows what it needs.
Walk: Being cooped up inside increases the feeling of stress because it seems like there’s no way out. Take yourself for a walk outside in a park or on a beach. The exercise will do you good, and being outdoors will give you back the feeling of space and provide you with a place where you can breathe freely again. Find a spot where you can sit and enjoy the natural world and let it put everything back into proportion.
Create: As an entrepreneur, you’re naturally creative, but you’ve probably been channelling it all into your business. Set your mind free and express yourself in a new innovative way. Choose painting, photography, writing or take music lessons – whatever appeals to you. Not only is it fun, but it’s also soothing, and once your mind calms, it will give you the answers you’ve been worrying about. Creativity stifles the negative, so that you can discover the positives.
Shift: Change your focus. You’re stressed because you’re standing in the middle of the problem. When you look at it from that focus – from the inside – all you’ll see are walls and obstacles. Try to put yourself in the shoes of an impartial observer and see how that changes your perception. You’ll see much more from outside the problem and the business.
Honestly, there will always be stress when you’re an entrepreneur and it can either limit or fuel you. Which way it goes is all up to you. Try the traditional stress management techniques and then try these. When you find one which works for you, you’ll save yourself hours of worry and rediscover the power of a good night’s sleep.
